Descent 3 permits up to 4 custom sounds to be played by
the client at any given time during a game. These taunts can be created with a
simple tool such as Windows Sound Recorder or any particular .wav editor. The
main requirements are that the file must be recorded at 8 bit/Mono/22 KHz. Then
you can open Descent 3 and import it (this will covert the file to an .osf file
which is Outrage's proprietary sound format). After importing, the file must be
no larger than 32 KB (for other players to hear). In certain situations, the
sound will appear to import correctly, but other players cannot hear the taunt
in game. This indicates the .osf file is larger than 32 KB. A general rule is
to keep your .wav files smaller than 64 KB.
Once you have downloaded or created such a .wav file start Descent 3, select
your pilot and click on the "Configuration" button. In the following dialog
select "Ship Configuration." Now click on "Import Sound" and point to your .wav
file. Then click "OK." If the file meets the requirements (see above) it will be
converted to .osf and copied to the CUSTOM\SOUNDS directory. You can now chose
your custom sounds in one of the drop-down lists named "Audio Taunt #1"
through "#4."
Click the "OK" button at the lower right to return to the previous menu. Then
click the "Configure Keyboard" or the "Configure Controller" button depending on
which you would like to use to activate the audio taunts. In the lower left
section of the screen, assign a key or controller button for each of the four
audio taunts you wish to use.
You may also find all sorts of taunts already available to try out in your
taunts list. This is from the games you've played online where people have been
using their taunts (causing you to download them automatically). These are okay
to use as well.
Recap
The audio file must be:
- 8 bit
- Mono
- 22 KHz
- No larger than 32 KB so others can download and hear them automatically during a
game.
